Greetings,

I am thinking of setting up a micro reef using a 12 Nano Cube as the tank. Many of you are aware that the NC is completely self contained, with a wet dry filter integrated in the back of the tank. (yes, I know about the short falls of WD filters on reefs. that will be the first think i'm goin’ to chuck :).

I'm concerned that because of the design of the tank, which does not lend itself well to protein skimmers that it may not be the best choice. But I love the design of the tank. I'm thinking that if I am consistent with water changes, say, once a week, that I can mitigate the nitrate levels such that I can house a few animals, such as an anemone and polyps, plus a couple fish.

Question: Has any of you had any experience with the Nano Cube or can anyone predict whether or not I’m heading for trouble? I’d like to hear your experiences before I sell my big tank and jump into this one.

Thx,

Wes

BTW, I am brand new to Reef Frontiers so I’m excited about being here. I’m sure it will be worth my time to pop in once in a while. 

:) Welcome to Reef Frontiers Wes!:)
Skimmerwhisper is a nano Tank expert, I am sure he will pop in here.:)

I had a Nano Cube DX for 6 mo. I did the fuge mod for the back and while I liked the look of the little system I had to sell it to a family member just getting into the hobby. I am still doing his water changes for him. The reason that I sold it is because there just wasn't enough room. I had tough times cleaning it and stocking it. About the anemone, not sure if I would put it in there. Anemone's get pretty big and need propper lighting. Hope this helps :)

I know someone here on the board with a kitchen full of the JBJ nano cubes and the few times I've seen them they all look clean and healthy. Hopefully she will pipe up with more info.

I just bought an Aquapod and am trying to decide what to do with the chambers in back, charcoal, rubble, or maybe try to grow chaeto in there, etc.

Nikki , (NAH20) has one and enjoys it and there is a whole thread started by 4251cpd on starting up a nano-reef using a 12 gallon Nano-cube.
Its a great read, informative and entertaining:
