well in my 100 gallon tank the one and only aptasia that was on the live rock that I put in has since turned into 20. I need something to eat/controll them. I have called all the local stores to see if I could find a Racoon Butterfly but no one has them right now. anyone have any suggestions? (pepperment shrimp are out of the question because I have a Lion, catshark and snowflake eel...)
if anyone has a racoon butterfly they wish to sell please let me know!!

Matt

Joes juice! Or kalk, you mix it up and squirt it directly into the mouth of the anemone. They instantly die! I know blue sierra sells joes juice, and I think Indoor has it as well. I can tell you from experience it works. If you decide to use kalk, let me know, I can give ya some.

ok, I forgot to mention one little obstacle. I have to access the tank from the back side and I cant see anything but the top of the water. and as you all know I have a lion in there. I guess I could have someone on the show side keeping watch for me so they can let me know where the lion is. I just dont want to get stung..

Matt

i'm not sure if it'd help but if i was you i'd be wearing those long gloves Nikki wears just in case, even though i doubt it'd help if the fish was about to sting you since i don't know how thick they are.

Just let him sting you for the next jackass movie. The joes juice is normally applied with a syringe with a plastic thick needle. I think if you stuck an airline hose to the end of it, you may have more room to get around. Good idea to have someone keep an eye out for the lion too!

Yeah Brett, maybe one of these days you can swing by and have a few beer's and we can zap some aptasia's.

Anytime man! Apitasia's tend to mutiply at alarming rates in high nutrient enviroments, thats why I've got so much experience with them! LOL!
PM me when you've got time and I'll be glad to come over and help ya out!

Aptasia's

Hey if you can't find a racoon butterfly your go is a copper band butterfly
and some times it will take a few day to a week before it eat those things. But a racoon is the best if you don't a have corals in the tank.

there are no corals, I dont know that a copperband would be a good idea because they dont do well with fish that induce stress. I think the racoon would stand up for itself a lot better. feel free to comment if you thin otherwise...

I agree then you might have to wait for the racoon fish, they are the best for that job,ooh also a long nose butterfly.

almost all your hardier butterflys will eat them i think, because i have been looking at some and most say not to put them with any anenomes.

Hey Matt can you take the rock out that has the aptasia on it?
Joes juice has worked the best for me so far. Some rock I have that I cant get to them I take the rock out and put it in a bucket. After an hour or so the aptasia will come out and then you can "feed" them.

Thats what I do.
I just haven't found a reliable "natural" cure to it. Feed them some juice!

I think I will do both methods, I will get the racoon (when one is available) and I will also zap as many of them as I can get, many of them are very small and in places I cant get to them.. I hope to not have to take all the rock out, but if I have to I will. the good news is I have no reason to be worried about them because I dont have corals in there I just dont want a bunch of them so I will kill them off somehow...

Matt

I have also started to see a bloom in my 210 and i have tried the kalk in a syrienge and only kille 2 out of 6 so i may also have to try this "juice".

They are sometimes a good thing. They give you a real good Idea of what is happening or is going to happen. If you are having new aptasia pop up, your rock work probably could use some extra work. If they are a constant battle, maybe some thought into how the tank is maintained should be the first course of action.

Don

Don what exactly do you mean by needing extra rock work? I know what you are getting at and that is high nutrient levels and yes they will be high with all aggressive carnivore fish in the tank, that is why I have a large skimmer that is rated for a 500 gallon tank on it. it pulls out about 2 gallons of skimate a week. let me know what you think I need to do as in what ever it is more rock work means..

BTW hope this doesnt sound sarcastic because it isnt in any way. you just never know how it sounds on the other end of the cpu....:D
