Brittle stars?

I just witnessed the wierdest thing. Every Brittle star got outside the rocks and stood on all of there legs. Then spewed a redish substance from there bodies. Now they all seem to be heading back into the rocks. Also my water is all murky now. Any ideas what happened. I am guessing spawning? I never relised how may Brittle stars I had.

Spawning is exactly what they were doing. Someone on here recently posted video of it happening in their tank. Pretty cool. You might consider filtering with carbon to clean up the water and remove any impurities that might have been released.
