I purchased a bullseye pistol shrimp and a Yasha Hase goby about two weeks ago hoping they'd form the typical shrimp/goby relationship. Though introduced at the same time, the goby has taken up residence at the front of the tank under a nice big shell piece and the pistol shrimp has completely disappeared.
I did see the pistol shrimp once after introduction, the same night, starting a burrow under some rock at center tank as expected, but haven't seen it since and can't tell if it truly has a burrow at that location. Right after lights-out each night there is about an hour long period where snapping noises come from the tank that were never present prior to introducing the shrimp. When I approach the tank and try to pinpoint where the noise is coming from, the snapping stops. I'm taking this as a sign that it's still alive in there, and maybe hunting the bristle worms that tend to come out right after the lights turn off? I've looked all over online and can't find any documentation on whether pistol shrimp eat bristle worms. Anyone know if they do?
The shrimp definitely isn't showing itself at feeding time or any other during the day, and normally I'd write the critter off as a casualty, but these guys are known for hiding, and I have no other explanation for all the snapping sounds in the evening!
