I wanted to raise my calcium levels. I have read how to do so with Dow flakes but wondered if I could not just mix Kalk and white vinegar to a pH of around 8.0 and dump strait in the tank. I dose kalk in my topoff but wanted to bump it up quickly. Has anyone done the strait kalk/vinegar mix or is there a downside providing the PH is near 8.0?

Its going to take alot of vinegar to drop the ph from 12 to 8 if thats what your trying to do, I'm not real sure that its possible never tried first hand.
I can tell you that will be one huge carbon source so you can expect havok in your tank. I would just get some CA chloride and do it safely. What is your ca level by the way.

My calc is 350. I recently raised my alk a bit too excessively as result of a cheap test kit, have since replaced with a salifert kit, the high alk really knocked down my calcium and I am trying to get it back up. I would not mind using CACL but I am not sure where to find it, tried Lowes with no luck. Water changes are going to take a while unless I do some really massive ones on my 180. I have upped my kalk dosing to saturation levels in the topoff bu this too will take some time.

Kalk is balanced so its going to bring up or maintain both ca and alk. There is a product called Dri Z Air. Its used it absorb moisture in RV's it can be had at Lowes, HD or even Wallmart. Its just Peladow and very cheap, dose it just like you would dow flake.

I will go by home depot and look for it. Thanks, I would rather avoid a science experiment with the kalk/vinegar.

Don, I'm not sure but I believe the dosing for Dri Z Air would be the same as Dow Pellets instead of Dow Flake. On Randy's Recipe page, the pellet and flake use different recipes. I hope I'm right, since that's the product I use and went with the pellet recipe...lol.

You are correct. Either one is fine and close enough.

Don't know if they have it this time of the year but I got a bucket of Pure Calcium Chloride pellets at Sam Club. It is by the same company that makes the Prestone Product.
