My tank temp recently went up to 83 degrees. I was told that is not a horrible thing but that I should watch it to make sure it doesn't get any higher. It doesn't but it seems that my 1/3 hp chiller can't keep up with the heat range. I got a new PH meter as a gift from some great friends and it has a temp probe on it. The temp display is in Celsius so I got online to find a simple conversion formula and when I did it said that my effluent was 87 degrees! I put the probe in the tank and it registered at 82 and the chiller temp probe said 82 degrees. So I figure it has to be the pump running the CR. It is just a little mag 3 and I don't see how it could be doing that to my tank but I am new to the CR world. Could it be the restriction in the plumbing or that I need a bigger or better pump or both? Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Angel :) I would definitely rectify the situation as it is winter .... and if you are having heat problems, or borderline heat issues, the summer months won't help later ;)

Can you experiment and turn off the skimmer pump for a day or so?

Angel, unfortunetely Mag pumps are notorious heat producers regardless of them being used underwater or out of water. I would look for a more power efficient pump if i could. As far as temp is concerned, 83 is not that bad living in PR and not having a chiller I can attest that corals would be fine. And seems to me you run your tank at 82 anyways. How fast is the effluent out of the Ca reactor?

Actually I like the temp to be around 81 degrees. I have the chiller at 79 +\- 2 degrees so 81 is the highest it should get. I also noticed that with everything on and the temp at 82 one of the heaters was kicking on so unplugged it and the coldest the tank got over night was 78 degrees. So that heater is going to be off for a while. The tank is at 82 degrees right now though and the chiller is running constantly so I am going to turn off the CR pump next and see what happens. Any recommended pumps for my set up? Thanks

Chiller

Hey Angel sorry to hear you fighting heating Issues a couple of questions

1. How many halides do you have on your tank? How long are they on?

2. What brand of chiller did you get? New?/used?

3 Chiller piped inside/outside?

I am having a hard time with a temp increase Angel with just the addition of a mag drive #3
I hope you get this resolved before you have to head out, Have you talked to Les you know he is Mr Refrigeration;)

I have three halides and four flourecents (NO). Halides on for 8 hours NOs on for 10.

The chiller is a rebuilt unit. Inside the house since I live in an apartment and can't drill through the walls.

I will probaly have Les check it this weekend if he has time. thanks

I, too, like to run on the higher temps. My main small reef is at 80-81, while my other clown tanks are kept at 82-83.

Best,

Ilham

I have to agree with gman. I had a mag 7 and a mag 5 on my calcium reactor and had the same affect. I have switched to a eheim pump and it now runs cool and quiet.
