Hey what about a mechanical filter what is all involved so any one anyone I think it is just a low pourouse filter in a canaster right

You wan the water to recirculate in an upwelling fahion and the end product to be able to vary from one drop per minute to serveral or more depending on how much calcium you need to replace on a daily basis. A CO2 regulator can be purchased from a welding supply store along with the cylinder. I would recomend just leasing the cylinder and replacing it every time you fill it up. You will need a needle valve and a bubble counter as well as a reaction chamber that you will probably have to purchase elswhere. After all of the tinkering and effort you put into it you may find that the price is more than the effort is worth.

Once you understand how they work they are easy. Hear is a effective design that should run you about $50 to build.

so as a machanical filter goes I am going to put a intake from the tank into the power head and throu the tube down into the bottom of the tank and it is forced throu the sand (filter media ) and up the sand and out to the refuge allaberate please

A mechanical filter can be many things. Simply allowing water to run through filter floss or a sponge is considered mechanical filtration. It all depends on how fancy you want to get. As for Don's post, that's a pic of what looks like a DIY calcium reactor:)

I did mine DIY by a modified design by DJ88 on reef central. Great reactor and HUGE capacity. Able to vary the size and keep the principles the same. i used scrap acrylic from a store near my house. I had no previous experience with acrylic and it was fun. Just the reactor was pretty cheep to make, it is everything else that makes it expensive (Co2 container, regulator, needle wheel, solenoid, recirc pump, etc).
