how can you tell if its dead or alive for sure?? i dont want any leaking of bad stuff into my system. i think it can do that?

But what does it look like? WHat color are you seeing?

Mine varies from a dark green, to a slightly lighter green.

yeah dark green or light green. its seems to be alive, but it has these kindof rings around it i guess. if it gets real brittle is it dead? mine seems ok i think.
