Allight... I know.. I know... VHO bulbs are SUPPOSED to be replaced every what... 6 - 10 months>??? (Someone please correct me if I am mistaken)

Before I start... I know Im SUPPOSED to change them... It just slipped my mind a little bit..
Let me share something... with all you great... NON FLAMING peeps!

I have 6 VHO bulbs (3 actinic and 3 50/50) and 2 power compacts (Both Actinic) for lighting on my 120 gallon softtie tank.. I put all new bulbs on the aquarium a little over a year ago. About 6 months ago.. I noticed a significant slow down of growth from ALL of my corals.. There was still light on the tank.. so I figured that wasnt the problem..(Mistake number 1 of god who knows) I started gettin algae out the wazzu... so I figured, since I just replaced the evaporated water with straight well water.. that had to the be the problem.. I didnt change anything really except lowered the amount of time the lights were on.. from about 11 hours to about 9 hours. Well.. I got frustrated.. and really wanted to sell the whole tank.. get rid of it... (plus it overflowed 3 times in two weeks that just made me even madder.) Okay.. lets jump foward 5 1/2 months.(Mistake Number 2 of a LONG list of them... I ignored EVERYTHING). I KNOW RIGHT... I dont deserve these corals.. Anyways.. nothing died.. everything was just hangin in there... not doing much of anything really.. growing.. but very slowly.. I had been pulling my hair out chasing down water peremeter issues and totally forgot about the bulbs..... the BULBS NEED CHANGING...over a year between changes cant be good. ... SO..... Replaced em all... and let me tell you something.... in the last 3 weeks I havent seen that kind of coral extension since.... well........... EVER.......I swear I can stand there and see things growing again.... The softies are opening up.. larger than I thought they ever could AND... my RBTA is actually out again..Anyways.. I know I waited to long between light bulb changes.. but I have to admit... it has been the difference for my tank and the difference was incredible.. I thought the tank WAS bright!!!! You should see it now! (DANGIT.. I should have taken before and after pics:idea:).. Just thought I would share...

CHANGE YOUR BULBS WHEN YOUR SUPPOSED TO!

I'm guilty of not changing my bulbs. I'm still using my VHO actinics from June of '05. Shh...don't tell anyone :D

I see you have MH too. That must be helping out the corals quite a bit. Do you have any algae problems?

My noob question:
So what's the standard life cycle of VHO and MH bulbs?

I bought my 250wt MH (single end) bulb 5 months ago....
(but my (2) 48" VHO actincts came used with the tank--so I'm not sure how old they are....)

I change my MH every year. The has actually been getting better with time and now I'm 99% algae free.

Here's my tank from November:

Its my understanding that VHO's should be replaced every 6 - 10 months. Metal Halides can go longer without changing, and I heard everything from 12 - 24 months on those. Someone else wanna chime in with a definitive answer on that?

I didnt replace my bulbs for almost 15 months.. and I'll tell you what.. When I saw the tank everyday.. I didnt notice it slowly getting dimmer.. until I did a major replacement, like in my case. BIG difference:D

(I know MH are better.. and I built the canopy to accomodate.. Im just too cheap to make the initial financial commitment on the ballasts.. ect. ect SOMEDAY I will tho.)

Very nice tank Blazer!
