Alrighty,

Seeing as Summer is going to be coming around the corner I wanted to ask local Pudget Sound Aquarists about chillers. Do you find that you need them? Also, if so, what are good brands of chillers? Who's had luck and with what?

I'd appreicate the help.
Thanks,
Brian.

I have always gotten by without one on my VHO only tank, but occationally had to turn on the air conditioner. Now that I have halides, am in the market. Small fans aren't quite enough even with the tank in the basement.

From my limited research so far, Pacific Coast Imports has a record of awesome customer service. They make a decent chiller at about the best price. Aqua logic chillers are so supposed to be the best, but you certainly pay for it.

I use the CL-650 from Pacific Coast Imports. I have to with the halides even in winter. It only comes on for 10 minutes every hour though. Once summer kicks in it'll be running 20 minutes on/10 minutes off until lights out. Very good chiller, and you can't beat the price. Fairly low db's for noise is always a plus, because I keep it next to the tank in our Living Rm.

tagging onto this thread, curious to see how many in the PNW use chillers (esp. how it corelates to their tank size.....)

I bought my whole setup used last fall, so I haven't been through a WA summer yet, BUT it was a 3-yr old reef with no chiller (and I don't remember seeing an A/C unit in the room when I bought the tank....)

The tank (glass 80 gallon) has 2 48" VHO and 1 250W MH, with tons of air flow through the canopy....
