I am intereseted in buying a clam to put in a 75 gallon fish tank with 500 total watts of metal halide lighting. I was just wondering what type of clam i should start out with and any other information that would help

Derasas, aka Smooth Giant Clam, are fairly forgiving as far as Tridacnids go
They are a photosynthetic Planktivore.
The derasa is generally considered a medium-maintenance specimen.

Mike ya beat me to it... Light is just one thing that is important there are many other things that matter when keeping clams as well...:)

With that light, go with whatever you want. Plenty of light. Pick one that catches your eye.

I beg to differ. Buying a clam that catches your eye is why so many clams die. As Jayson pointed out, there are a lot more factors besides lighting that determine a clams health. Stably high range Calcium, Alkalinity, magnesium, low nitrates, food sources, lack of impurities such as metals and phosphates. They do best in a very established tank. Clams are not snails, and I have seen many well lit tanks with dying snails and barely surviving corals for that mater.

Sorry for the sermon, but too many beautiful clams soon fail due to taking them lightly.

I have to agree with you Mike, there's times that I'd love to just go out and buy a beautiful clam or coral that I want, but I know that I don't have the right enviornment for one yet, namely the high calcium.
