I have been using a mag-float (acrylic one) on my 100 gallon tank. It just doesn't seem to have the power to scrape off the really tough stuff.

Does anyone own one of the more expensive magnets like a magnavore or the hammerhead magnets? Are they worth the higher cost?

Yes, the pricey magnets work well and IMO well worth the cost.

You even get the added benefit of a good workout with the stronger ones. :)

Stop by anytime and give mine a try; but you have to do all sides of the tanks!

I had a Magfloat and moved up to the Hammerhead. It was well worth the money. Also, I use an Acrylic cleaner on the glass. Makes the magnet slide MUCH easier and cleans the glass.

using the nicer ones are well worth it, most of them offer scratch removal pads so you can buff out small scratches inside your running tank.
