Can somebody tell me or can point me to a resource explaining what corals are safe to place next to each other on a rock or in the general vicinity of each other??? I know some corals are totally incompatible while others are ok

That would be an endless list. Your best bet is to list corals you're interested in and go from there. A good rule of thumb is that MOST corals are not safe to place too close to one another. Even corals of the same species can harm one another, though there are a few exceptions. Frogspawn and Hammer corals will usually get along with one another. Different colors of M. capricornis will usually co-exist. Pay attention to "usually."

Caio,

Julian Sprung's book "Corals - a quick reference guide" may help you alot it has a very basic graph showing Lighting needs, Water Flow, Agressiveness and Hardiness on most of the common Soft And Stoney corals of the trade. It is one of my favorite reference books.
