Other way around, but yes. The leathers (sarcophyton) are very noxious. The zoas are too, but not nearly as bad, and only through touch. The leathers can put stuff through the whole tank. Yellow fiji's are gorgeous!!!

I have no issues but that all depends on the zoa I would guess. I have them all around the base of my toadstool and have no issues. Some may not agree to this and say that all corals need there space to grow out, but what happens when there is no more space. I know that people trim them back and make more room, but to me that just seems like it stress's them out more then a zoo climbing up iots backside. I have a clam that has zoo's on it and it doesn't seem to bother it.

We have a toadstool leather, and there was a mushroom touching the stalk, and half of the 3" mushroom burned off. This just happened like this week. So if you don't care what happens to the zoos go for it, but the leather will probably win that chemical war.

thanks now i know what i need to do. i have two zoa's and a GSP all prity close to the yellow fiji. looks like i need to brake them up before they start a fight... what about the GSP, will the leather bother it? thanks

I have a tank full of leathers and zoanthids and it's my opinion that they will co-exist just fine. One thing you do have to watch out for is sometimes the zoanthids will really start growing and try a smother anything that gets in their way. They have the ability to spread right up the side and over other corals. If they are really nice ones, let them grow where they want and just move the other stuff. lol.

I really don't think the chemical warfare the leathers use has much effect on zoanthids.

whats your opinion on the GSP and the other corals i mentioned?

GSP will also grow over most other corals. It's one you really have to keep a eye on. One of the tings that I don't like about it is that it will cover any bare rock. At first you might think it's cool, but then you realize that all that nice looking rock is buried. That's why I try and keep it growing on the back wall of my tank.

sounds like the GSP is the one to realy wach as far as taking over. thanks to all who replyed. im shure i will have more questions.

Hello,
Most soft corals do just fine together as they occur in close proximity in nature. Regular water changes and the use of carbon will help to reduce chemical compound buildup in the tank.

Not all soft corals use chemical warfare. Some have the ability to sting other corals when they make physical contact. Zoanthid sp. and corals of the Corallimorpharia Order (Mushrooms) have this ability but are quite resistant to terpenes which Sarcophyton sp. and Sinularia sp. produce.

Stings which produce necrotic tissue on the stalks of Sarcophyton corals can be difficult to arrest and are best prevented by keeping stinging corals a couple of inches away.

HTH,
Kevin
