coral spacing

I have a silly question. Everything I read says to leave a lot of space between corals, yet when I see all of the pictures of the beautiful tanks on here they seem crammed together. I am building my corals slowly but surely (tank up for about 7 months) and want to do it correctly. Any thoughts?

A lot really depends on the type of coral and how it can attack others. some have long stinging tenticles that can reach out and others release chemicals. some are stronger than others.
