question???? the coralline algea that was on the LR I bought has white splotches now. seems more so now than I believe before.

I thought I read or heard somewhere that it isnt uncommon that this can happen, right? or am I having some issue? 1st thing Ill say is we havent yet purchased quality light, currently just the plain ole crappy flourescent stock aquarium hood lights. ( dont know if that may be an issue)
My flow seems good. any parameter I need to be aware of that could cause this?
now in one or 2 spots I think I see new coralline growth as well.

More than likely you are seeing algae die-off. This is pretty typical when putting used rock from one tank to another. You could also have low calcium and or dKh is not set right. This could cause any new growth to stop and even recess. Lights are huge too. Without good lighting you won't see much if any growth.

I agree..

I would tend to agree with FreakinReefin. When you change lighting spectrum there usually is Die Off and a algae bloom due to change. Your Coraline algae usually comes back pretty quick if parameters are in check. I look forward to a algae bloom when I change lighting systems on a aquarium. I recommend getting one turbo or astrea snail per gallon to combat this.


Another method is ...the use of Algae. A expert once told me to use as many different types of algae in my refugee. Algae competes for territory also.

First thing I'd check is calcium and alkalinity. Any ca level above 380 should be OK for coraline. You probably also want to aim for 8-12 dKh on the alkalinity.

When I started my tank up I wasn't checking those since I didn't have any coral. My coraline was growing gangbusters but then started bleaching. Turns out my coraline was sucking up a ton of calcium and my levels were in the low 300s, even with weekly water changes. Had to start dosing 2-part just for my calcium!

Also... long exposure to air (like during transport) can bleach it out. But that should be apparent a week or two after the exposure.

Thanks all for the reply Ill be looking to improve my lighting soon, and I am still trying to grasp the parameters beyond Salinity and Ph still in my infancy with this hobby LOL

coralline will need all three to be in check ca alk and mag with those 3 in check and time it will come back full force.

all of the existing coraline went white on my LR when i added it. but within 3 weeks it was back in force (with slightly different but more brilliant color) and 2 weeks after that my home made LR was glowing green and pink over about 40% of the surface, all i have is PC lighting. so it seams to me that the lights matter only for the color you will get not weather it will grow. just keep your chemistry inline and pay attention to something else, it will show up in time.

checked basic parameters, other than Mag ( dont have test yet) and all was good otherwise, calc, Ph etc... LFS said that if all else is good mag is Likely the issue, started up with "ions" yesterday.
I think I am seeing some new growth in a different location now

I'm not familiar with "Ions" but usually I steer away from anything that has something in it that I can't test for.

Keep everything stable and you will be wishing you didn't have Coraline soon enough. I have it all over in my sump, and its just lit with some very old t8 shoplights.
