Would are the max/min temps for most reef fish? This is for when extreme cases arise such as power outage or hot summers.

I not totally sure every fish, coral and invert. have there own max temp they can handle but I know of a tank that is running around 84-85 and the fish are doing ok but the corals are stressed and the clean up crew is almost all dead. So with that said I would not allow a tank above 82 degrees for long periods of time. My DT runs 80 which is close to the danger level but that is as low as I can get it without using a chiller and everything is doing fine.

My tank runs between 78-80 all the time. I dont have a chiller or a heater. My metal halides and skimmer pumps and fuge light take care of the heat. Last summer my tank was getting up to 84. Did not like that at all. Fish were mopy, corals were stressed. When it got that high, i would put 2 1g milk jugs of frozen water in the sump. I had 4 jugs total, 2 in use and 2 frozen ready to go.

I would consider the fish just like the corals.... From 76 to 82. Anything outside of those temps for very long will have negative effects on everything in your tank.

Having said that. Last winter my 65 ramped up to 86 degrees over three days after a WC. I only noticed it when I put my hand in the tank because everything looked fine. i'm sure I was hours from massive catastrophy in more ways than one. Things are tough and can handle slow changes better than rapid changes. They all have their limits though.

thanks for the responses. Ideally, I want to have some sort of back up power (when I can afford it). The ice in the sump is a really good idea especially since chillers are so expensive. I am still worried about power outages. I cross my fingers every time a storm is predicted in our area.

A 800-1000 watt power inverter hooked up to your car battery can run most of your tank in case of a power outage. Can be found at any auto parts store and usually less than $100 depending on the size.

I have 1500 watt cobra inverter with a really long 0 gauge wire harness that I made for it. It is for sale for 100.00 it was use only one time for camping but now i have tent trailer and a generator. let me know if you are interested just send me a PM..
It is a 120.00 inverter and 80 bucks worth of wire cause it is real copper.

with the power inverter, will it automatically switch on when there is a power outage? or would I have to manually switch it on?

you would have to do it.. you could do a little solar set up with a dual battery set up if you dont want to hook it up to your car..
