I was reading a post from a while back about trying to find the reason for extra nutrients and some one mentioned they found a lot of dirt in their overflow. Well, I was doing a water change and decided to peak in my overflow and found about 3-4" of crud. It was so thick I had to vacum it out with my wet n' dry. It will be interesting to see if it helps with some excess algae.

i have, the same problem, (not that much) (you got a lot) but i have a small amount of waste looking stuff siting in the 2nd lowest outside part (witch is hard to get a tube down in there. but i will clean it sooner or later

Im sure if you had that much it will help by removeing

Sumps, prefilters etc all need to be kept clean. Also, ever cleaned out a submersible pump in a bucket of water??? Even small things like a pump can build up with a lot of detritus/waste.:)

My tank is out in my garage now so I think I may take my durso pipe out just to make sure that the overflow stays clean since noise is not an issue. What does everyone think about that?
