That depends on what kind of algae it is. There have been some oubeaks of the nasty Dinoflagellate Amphidinium carterae in some areas that has taken out whole tanks.
If algaes are growing on the skeleton of corals, it can kill them. Other than that, algaes normally don't kill fish or corals. There are a few species that can be toxic though...especially when eaten by fish.
