Tracy - Is that glass or plexi?

Where did you learn of the method? it seems to make sense b/c I've drilled plexi before and it gets really hot. But, is there any worry that the antifreeze remanants would stay in the tank & poison the inhabitants?

Use the same system but using water as a coolant and lubricant works just fine. The putty dam trick has been used in the industry for over 50 years. Many decades ago, my father used to drill glass with carbide steel bits. Took forever but got the job done. Diamond bits VASTLY speeds the process up.

Yes the tank is glass. and I just used putty because I had some handy. Got the overflow Idea fron LCATTIN. Just Wanted to shair it with you guys/girls. As far as poison getting in the glass, I didnt think of that. I have two more holes to drill. Think I should use water ?

I don't know about the antifreeze vs. water question - I'm always even afraid to put glass cleaner on the outside, but I think that is fake paranoia. I'd try water and see if it works just as well, if it does, then use that. If it doesn't, I think you'll probaby be just fine as long as you wash it really well.

As for glass cleaner, not paranoia, correctly concern about ammonia and or phosphates and other polutants

The overflow idea originally came from Anthony Calfo I believe. When I drilled my 65 I just had my neighbor keep the diamond drill flooded with a garden hose. There is a bit of noise with the water and I have thought about installing Durso style standpipes on the back of the bulkheads to try to quiet them down a bit. Don't get me wrong, the noise is not bad as mine is in the TV room and it is not a problem.

I took me about 1/2 hr per hole. Drilled small pilot hole first then the other. Had to take time off. Standing on ladder and 6' tank on end. Hole worked just as well with water. Nice call HEREFISHY. Got bulkheads in today and overflow box silaconed in. Send pic soon. Shes all plumbed. Working on sumps. Should be filling in a few days. I am going to put my killer CRAB (see post on ID ) in first and if he lives than I think there is no posion in tank LOL

One word of advice....Drill halfway on one side then finish the hole on the oposite side so you don't get nasty chip away. nice jobe by the way.

Looks great. What's your flow rate through that thing. Of course it looks like more since you put it on the short end where mine is across the back.

Yes its on the short end. New at this kind of overflow. Think I would have screwed up on the long end. Running amp master 3200/2700. Ran 1" up to the upper sump that was going to be gravity fed( changed my mind) and the other to 5 1x3/4 tees for inlets to tank then 2 1" bulks to 11/2 return To lower sump. This could be alot of nothing just hope it all woks out. Dont know if this is going to work but I would like to have in one of the sump chambers full of zinia to help filter water and all the others full of red/green plant life. Dont know if anyone tryed the zinia thing. If so or if someone thinks its a bad idea please let me know.
