Hi Boomer,
I'm in the process of getting rid of some bryopsis clumps in my 170 gallon system. The Mg levels are currently at 1650. Are there any long term issues with keeping the levels at 1600 or so?

Water parameters this afternoon:

dKH 14.4
Ca 395
Mg 1650
pH 8.2
NO3 undetectable
Salinity 1.027

All tests by Salifert except salinity, which is by refractometer...

I'm not a fan of the long term debate, even if there is one. Keeping it that high for to long bothers me if it was raised with Magnesium Sulfate rather than Magnesium Chloride. Even if Mg-Cl I would not let it go long term. There is also a newer method that seems to be just as effective without all that Mg-sulfate/chloride addition. It is the same one used for Dino's, just raise the pH up to 8.5-8.6 for a couple of weeks with Kalk. It starves them of CO2 like dino' s and they do not seem to be good HCO3- --> CO2 converters, just like Dino's.

It was raised to that level by Seachem's Reef Advantage Magnesium, (Chloride). I was not aware that raising pH would do the same for taking care of bryopsis.

I just recently read somewhere, (can not remember where exactly), that we as a whole, (hobbyists) have been running reeftanks with the pH too low for too long anyway. I believe it was Anthony Calfo who suggested raising the pH to about 8.4-8.5 ideally.

Any long term affects from raising the pH to that level?

Just to share that i'm employing the natural way of controlling bryopsis using Sea Hare. (but you will have to pluck them manually to make it shorter and Sea Hare will take care the rest ) very effective IMO.

Note : Sea hare is easily stuck with pumps.

I tried the high Ph method before and it works wonder seeing algae just slowly dissapearing (but too worry that corals might be stress as well so i did not stay with the high PH for too long) Anyone can share if there is any long term damage to run our reef tank at 8.5-8.6 ? Any link for me to read up as well

Thanks:)

Long term is not good as we really dont' know what the effect would be, same for Mg++, so 2 wks or so is the suggested time.

Gotcha....
well, I think I'm going to stick w/ the higher Mg levels until the bryopsis is gone, almost there anyway....
and then I'll let it work its way back down....
