I am extreamly happy this month. 3 months ago I removed my old oil burner and installed a 95% efficient, Energy Star rated gas boiler. I just got my first bill for the three months, it was $400.00.
That is for heat, hot water and cooking for two families in New York.
Last year for heat alone it cost me about $2,500 for the same period.
I used about 1,100 gallons of oil a winter and last year it was close to $4.00 a gallon.
I am so glad I got rid of that piece of junk. It only took me about 4 days to remove the oil burner and install the new gas system with the associated plumbing with three zones.

A year ago I installed Solar electric panels on my roof which saves me about $1,500.00 a year.
Between the heating system and the Solar, I am saving about $4,400.00 a year. And helping the envirnment

Now I can't wait until I can buy a totally electric American car. :D

That is some great savings!!! Everything should pay for themselves in no time!! I would love to do solars for my home but don't have the moolah to take it there yet. Hopefully they will be more affordable by the time I am ready to purchase a new home.

Did you qualify for the energy efficiency tax credit? You should check if you haven't. There are sites that list all the models that qualify for the $1500 credit. We bought our A/C this summer when Washington Energy Services was matching the tax credit. Good deal and now I have A/C for the two weeks out of the year that we actually need it.

Yes, I qualify for the tax credit. I already received $7,000.00 tax back for the solar and $1,300.00 rebate for the furnace. I will now get a tax return for the furnace also.
I also got about $13,000.00 back in rebates for the solar.
This stuff is practically free, especially if you install it yourself

did you pick up the solar panels locally or do you have any recommendations for a website where someone can get them?

Tom

form the tiny bit of info i'm finding on that site about cost and install without getting an estimate. Its looking like it needs to be installed by their union workers. How were you able to get the panels and install them yourself?

I was one of their Union workers.
I am retired.
There are places to buy the system but the system comes complete with the brackets to install the panels and the inverter.
I don't know how it works in your state but look up solar panels on line and see if they will sell you a system.
That site I posted will also sell you a system in WA. I took a course on installing them
but I would imagine if you can do electrical work, you could install them. You just need a lisensed electrician to make the final connections to your panel so you could get it inspected and get the rebate. They will not give you the rebate unless it is inspected.
