Flatworm Exit. What is it?

Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum

Help Support Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum:

It is believed to be the same as PraziPro, which is oxybispropanol (as an inert solubilizing agent) and <5% praziquantel by weight.

Praziquantel (Biltricide) is an anthelmintic effective against flatworms. As of 2005, praziquantel is the primary treatment for human schistosomiasis, for which it is usually effective in a single dose. It is also used to treat echinococcosis, cysticercosis, intestinal tapeworms and the liver flukes except for fascioliasis. In veterinary medicine it is widely used against tapeworms, going by the trade name of Droncit®.

2-(Cyclohexylcarbonyl) -1,2,3,6,7,11b-hexahydro-4H-pyrazino (2,1-alpha) isoquinolin-4-one

or C19-H24-N2-O2

Thanks Boomer. PraziPro is alot cheaper than FE and is sold as a pond antiparasitic. Would you follow the dosing instructions that are on the bottle for a reef tank?

Well, the link says for marine aquraiums but you are on your own. The reason I think it is this is that many of the comments in the directions are very similar. Make sure you understand this

Contraindications: There are no known contraindications to the use of Liquid PraziPro™ except for use in marine (saltwater) systems where flatworms of the Polycladida order are being cultured.

It means there are no known "contraindications", meaning risks for using it in FW but there may be some risks in SW. I would try a 1/2 dosage to be safe if it was treid.

I did find this May also be used as a preventive. Not recommended for reef aquariums with Feather Duster Worms or other ornamental worms.

and also this

A fellow reefer asked me if I would explain my treatment for pinched mantle with Prazi Pro in detail and I figure it's better to post it here for everyone to see:

Upon receiving a clam near the 1st of June (small 1.5 inch croacea) I discovered what I observed to be pinched mantle. This was confirmed when the tank he was sold from had a gigas die from pinched mantle. The clam did not look like it was doing terribly but in order to head the problem off at the pass if you will, I began researching methods of treatment. FW dips will help the clam out for several days but the infection usually returns within a week. I know I took a huge risk (my tank has extreme flow and is all SPS and that small croacea along with a large 6 inch one. The 6 inch clam showed no signs of infection but I wanted to rid the water column of the infection as well. I read somewhere (I honestly can't remember where but I imagine it was on clamsdirect's forum) that people had sucess with prazipro. I read the label of the bottle and it claimed to kill fluke (the infection is a type of protozoan) and was totally reef safe. I have a 30 gallon aquarium with a 10 gallon sump for reference but used whatever the recommended dose was, I believe 1 tablespoon. I turned my skimmer off for 6 hours then adjusted it down when I took it back online (Euroreef CS6-1). Within the next day, the clam was the most expanded it had been and within two days was out like a normal happy clam should be. I experienced no side effects save the skimmer going a little crazy and it's now been 3 weeks with no sign of the infection returning. Oh, also I added the dosage only once and to the overflow to give it a maximum mixing time before going into the tank. Hope this helps and let me know if I can do anything else for you!

*I'd also like to include a list of the corals and critters that were unaffected by the medication (it supposedly kills flatworms as well )
-Various fish including a Potter's Angel, chalk basslet, and yellow assessor
-Shrimp including cleaner and peppermint
-Various hermits and an emerald crab
-Snails (Astrea, Turbo, Cerith)
-Acropora species including torts, stags, and a small tabling frag
-Montiporas
-Blastos
-Zooanthids and Palythoas of various colors

Mike I do not know what the dosage would be. Type an Goolge search and type in " Praziquantel coral dip"

Herefishyfishy

Prazipro is not anywhere nearly as effective as FWE

Do you think it is the same stuff or higher in concentraion ? It may seem like it is not if the FWE also does not make the skimmer go nuts. And have you tried it or is this just what you have heard ?

I have tried both multiple times. The Prazipro comes in some kind of gel and I think the gel acts like a surfactant creating the skimmer activity. The instructions state "May cause temporary foaming"

The prazipro left the majority of the flatworms to reproduce.
The FW exit when run at a higher than recommended dose and LEFT IN THE TANK TO BREAK DOWN, not running carbon or water changes right away, killed all FW dead.
I took great care to run a filter sock to catch the dead ones and clean the sock out every hour or so. Lost no fish nor inverts. Killed all FWs dead, even the ones in the sand.

Learned the trick of leaving FWE in the tank and just letting it break down on it's own from Kevin Pockell
