I've had this echino growing in my tank for a while, but was not able to get a good picture of it until I moved some liverock the other day. It is turning out to be one of my favorite echinos with deep purple rings around bright green mouths, surrounded by a sea of light blue.

Matts125,
Are you sure that's a true Watermelon echino? Here is my Watermelon echino that I got from Ron Johncola:

and here is a 4-color chalice, not as bright red as the melon:

no you don't !!! you got a watermelon enchino !!! i'm so jelous right now !!!i've seen Tyree's watermelon list for a frag and if i wanted one i'd have to wait until 2009 i believe :p .....seriously watermelons are really kewl corals :D ...........................................darn it ...i'm truthly jelous :p

Matt,
We may be talking about different echinos with similar names :) . Mine is called a Watermelon Alien Eye directly from Jon Roncola. Jon shared a frag with Hugo Zuniga (Snipersps) who eventually shared a frag to Tyree. It is now one of Tyree's Limited Edition corals.

In any event, both are very nice echinos. Do you have any other echinos? If so, post them! I have a couple more show pieces that I think are spectacular, just need to move things around to get some good pictures.

I have another echino in my tank that looks very similar to your pic called Molten Lava as shown below.

ok here's a question....how do you which one is the true watermelon enchino?

i've seen some in a on line store saying.....watermelon enchino and then they put....this is not the true watermelon ... what heck does that mean?
how do you recognice you got the real deal? :p

Matts,
Fantastic flourecent green on that one!

Spongebob lover,
It's not easy to trace a frag backwards to the original mother colony and owner, but this one was easy. I got my frag from Jon who had the original mother colony. Steve Tyree from Reefarmers has been very good about documenting the linage for the corals that he sells. Take a look at here:
http://www.reeffarmers.com/limitedwatermelon.htm

The confusion is that many reefers are calling their corals names that may have originated from a single line of frags from one mother colony. The problem is that many of the corals have close (or the same) similarities in color & morphology. I have found that same echino frags look very different in coloration depending on the lighting conditions. The bottom line is that there are many of the same/similar corals in the ocean that are being harvested and put on the market all the time. This whole coral naming thing is becoming quite the fad....take a look at zoa names!

Anyway, this is too long of an answer to a good question. My philosophy is to have a peaceful/relaxing tank with nice corals based on good husbandry.

Matt:

Tyree called that an echinophylia echinoporides if I am remembering correctly. He has it listed as one of his many limitted additions.

Great Thread Breakerbob

I have enjoyed the picture and the comments, However trying to understand and learn more like gabby can any of you who have a echinophylia species pass on more and what you believe is the best practice for taking care of one. I was very lucky last month a very good Friend of mine entrusted me with two frags to grow . ( thanks ED) I have them at 14" below 250 watt halide's and they seem to be doing quite well Here is some poor shots of them. I need Krish to come on over with his new Cannon and shoot some good stuff...Jeff

i remember i saw that list a few months back and it was at 2009 now it's at 2011  .... at that rate i'll never make it  .
i saw some in a on line store and i was so impressed but it got me confused after the ... but it's not a true watermelon  and it's not the first time.

Jeff, those corals are very cute dood :)

Apprentice,
Here is a link to a newsletter from a Sacramento group of Reefers on echinos:

http://marineaquarist.org/newsletter/July_2005.pdf

As far as lighting goes, I have most of mine about 15" down from the 250 watt 14K Hamilton MH bulbs. I do have some others that don't seem to do as well in the bright light on the bottom or the sides of my tank where there is less light hitting them.

Here is one of my more distinctly colored echinos....it's blue with pink eyes:

What is the difference between Chalice and Enchino?
Vicki

I would be interested in the answer to that question too! I find it extremely difficult to tell the difference between an Oxypora, echinophyllia & chalice. They all belong to the Pectiniidae family, genus Echinophyllia, Oxypora, Mycedium & Pectinia.

I have noticed that while many of these corals appear similar, the amount of tissue on the coral skeleton differs. However, I could not tell you what genus they belong to based on the amount of tissue they have. For some reason, I cannot get the thinner tissued oxy/echino/chalice to grow in my tank. I suspect that they need lower lighting conditions than I can offer.
