Forked Tail Blennies

Hello everyone,

I am hoping to gain a little knowledge of this species as I realize through looking at pictures, I actually picked up one of these little guys instead of the mimic that I had ordered. I heard that the fork tailed blennies are venemous, and if so, I would like to know how venemous they are. Where is their venom located, and how do they transfer venom. I am cautious to keep this fish without knowing more. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't know a lot about them, but this is what I have read... They have a venomous bite to protect them from being eaten by predators. It is supposedly not very harsh. From what I have seen of these little fish and spoken with people who own them, they are very peaceful and have never attacked a hand coming in the tank. I always ask because I have had my eye on them too and plan to get one in the future .

I have had 2 in the past and never had any problem with either, they seem to be shy and hearty, I always have my hand in the tank and have never been poisioned or scared I have transfered in nets with my hand also just like any other fish. It is good to be aware but in this case I would not worry a bit they are just like any other fish. Unless you have an attack fish. lol

Is that the same as a canary blenny? If so, I have a green canary blenny and he has never tried to bite me at all. He is super cute. I believe they just use that as a defense mechanism should they find themselves inside a mouth they dont want to be in.

Thanks for the replies. I don't know if I have an attack Blennie on my hands or not, yet... LOL, but I've only had him for a few day too. Good to know. I'm not too concerned about him with my hands as I am with other fish. I didn't know if they'd bite a fish that was attempting to harass it (Like my fairy wrasse). But's it's always good to know what you're dealing with.

I know I had 2 fire fish and one gave my blennie a hard time for a while untill I upgraded to a 240 and no one ever got poisioned or bit to my knowlege. My guess is that is a last resort defence like when being eaten, just hope no one tries to eat him

Well, thanks to all for the replies. Unfortunately the little guy wouldn't eat for me and ended up meating a premature demies. That sucked!! Off topic, but WA Coral, is that your pit bull on your avitar? Just curious. As you may be able to tell by my name..I'm all about the pits. I've got three at home.

Yes hes mine I have 2 big males (they get along) the one in the pic is the biggest he is our protector and loves his job, amongst kids and friends he woulnt hurt a fly, they are both just really big babies its all in how they are raised and trained. We love em

Amen to that. I also have two males and a female. They all get a long and I have had no problems what so ever.
