Just curious on what the basic maintenance needs to be on a planted fresh water tank. Im guessing no sump and no skimmer. Maybe a reactor with carbon and just regular water changes? Don't worry not converting just want a separate tank :D

you need to inject co2 for the plants to grow i use to keep a planted tank until my turtles thought it was a endless buffet

Depending on which type of plants you plan to go with, you can get by with sometimes not much at all. My buddy who owns a LFS here had an amazing planted tank with discus in it. He did have to use a bubble counter and CO2 tank, but it was really nice!! I asked him one time ago what it took to take care of one of them and he said they are pretty much a breeze to take care of. Most of the work is just trimming the plants back. Also, he said that any waste produced in the tank was taken care of by the plants which they use for their growth which works out really well. One thing he did say though was that you would need to use a special form of substrate that almost acts as tank soil as your tradional gravel wont really work. :)

Once again sorry for having to move the thread here due to it not being salt related. :)

Thanks guys i've been looking at various "soils" along with co2 tanks. Looking for the cheapest option on co2 since the fresh water wont be a serious hobby.
