well I'm looking to put an scwd in my new sump. which is 29 gallons.
My question to you is, whut is #1:the correct pump for a 5 foot head
#2:whut brand? This will be dual return, so what kind of punp will best serve the health of my fish and coral? IE good flow?

Well, first off, I've read numerous times that the SCWD will make you lose 30% to 50% of the flow sometimes. You can even read some of the responses customers added here
http://www.premiumaquatics.com/Merc...roduct_Code=SQUID-WM&Category_Code=Wavemaking

As for a pump to use, I'd either go with the old reliable magdrive pumps or the Quiet One pumps. I have both and love them both. As for how big, it would all depend on how much flow you'd want passing through your sump and being returned to the tank, but just keep in mind that you will have about 30-50% loss in flow so you may need a slightly bigger pump to accomodate the exact flow you are looking for. They say the SCWD can run with as little as 50gph up to 1400gph. Here are just a few numbers I copied off of a website which will give you some idea on the flow you'd get at about 4-5ft of head...

Mag7 - 700gph @ 0ft and 425gph @ 4ft ($57)
Mag950 - 950gph @ 0ft and 800gph @ 4ft ($69)
Mag12 - 1200gph @ 0ft and 1100 gph @ 4ft ($101)

Quiet One 3000 - 780 gph @ 0ft and 500gph @ 4ft ($47)
Quiet One 4000 - 1017gph @ 0ft and 775gph @ 4ft ($59)
Quiet One 5000 - 1330gph @ 0ft and 1000gph @4ft ($92)
Quiet One 6000 - 1506gph @0ft and 1200 gph @ 4ft ($95)

HTH:)

thanks krish, people like yourself are the reason this is such a great site. thanks again. One more question, would 2 scwd, better benifit my tank?

mag 18? flow rate? yea, from what I read on above mentioned link, its about a 50% drop in flow, if I play the law of averages, I'll have to assume, I'll fit in that category. Thanks!

Thanks man...I try:) About using 2 SCWD's it's also an option, but you'd have to consider the possible loss of flow through them. Also, don't forget you will have to get a pump that won't be too much for your overflow to handle. The mag18 will give you 1800gph @ 0ft and 1350 @ 4ft so if you say take into account a 50% loss (if infact that will happen) you would get 675 gph. I've heard that the mag18's give off a bit of heat, but I've never personally experienced it. If you are looking for other ways to use your sump return to give you some random flow, and money isn't really an issue, then here are a few other options which you may be aware of, but I figured I'd post them just incase:)

I had the 3/4 sea-swirl before and had 750gph running through it. Really added some nice random flow to the tank. I loved it, but would be too bulky sitting on my cube so I got rid of it. http://www.premiumaquatics.com/Merc...roduct_Code=SEASWIRL&Category_Code=Wavemaking

This is the wavy sea which is a bit more compact in size and more versitile from what I understand than the Sea-swirl http://www.premiumaquatics.com/Merc...Product_Code=FC-WV-B&Category_Code=Wavemaking

This is supposed to be the real deal...Oceans motions. Matt (mattseattle) Todd (disturbedreefer) Nick (Maxx) all use them and seem really happy with it.

Then there's the MBV (motorized ball valve) like Scott (Scooterman) is using that switches currents as well. I don't have an actual link to where you can get one, but could easily find out if your are interested, but here's a pic of scooty's

Nevertheless, if you just wanted to toss on the scwd seeing they don't really cost much to try and add some random flow then this pic might inspire you. This guy's got 2 scwd's on this tank like you asked about! Have fun!!!:D

I've found the clog a bit, so make sure they're in a somewhat easy to maintain location.
