My temp is gong up and down. I have it set for 78 but last night it was 84 and on some nights it drops to 72. That much of a temp change in one day can’t be good. Do you think the heater is bad? Has anyone had this trouble with there tank. My cleaner shrimp has disappeared would the temp change kill him.

I would say it sounds like a heater malfunction. I get a new one and check that out.

And yes a temp swing like that could have killed a shrimp.

BIG temp swings are bad for fish, inverts and corals. Unless you keep your room REAL warm or the halides are on at night, I would say absolutely to replace the heater before the tank gets cooked and consider buying a temp controller.
