First off....
Hi to everyone...
I've just gotten back into the saltwater hobbie after several years. I've maintained a few tanks before....2-10 gls, 1-29 gls, and 1-60 gls fish only and reef all at the same time at one time or another. I've used w/d and sand plenum/live rock filteration. I have built my own skimmers and w/d filter. My 60 gl tank was 24x24x24 ( cube ) so I had to build my own w/d to fit under the cabinet as the store boughts would not fit under the cabinet.
At this time I have set up a 10 gl reef ( sand plenum w/ skimmer ). I have 25 lbs live sand and about 20-25 lbs rock...3lbs of it live. The base ( 20-25 lbs, ) is rock that I had back in the day and it is DEAD...the type is Tonga and Fiji. Tank has been up for about 2 wks now.
Things are proceeding as normal.
Being out of the loop for awhile ...I have come across a few products that i am not familiar with and would like some feedback on if possible.....products are as follows.....

Purple Up...

SEA-LAB No.28...

Coralife 50/50 Mini Compact Flo's

Any feedback on these products would be appricated.
Again...Hi to all and I look forward to talking with you all.

purple up is a buffer no?
SEA, i dont know
The compact, will help you with coral if you plan on keeping them

theres a lot of good info here for you here, read around look at peoples hardware list

Hello and Welcome to RF,

Purple up is just a buffer that is supposed to help coralinr grow. I am not sure how it works since I have never used it. Sea-Lab I have never heard of it and Compacts are ok lights. T5's are more widely used now.

Burning2nd i9s absolutely correct, Great people here with ALOT of information. Ask away!

Oh by the way, watch out for that Krish guy, he has a knack for giveing good information.

As already stated, purple up is used to promote coraline growth. I've used it before and worked really well. From what I understand I think it just works by provides you with calcium, mag and alk which coraline needs to grow.

Sea lab, I've never heard of before  and compact flourescents are cool...I've run a few of them before, but never actually tried keeping any corals underneath them besides zoanthids (which did seemingly well). In any event, they say you can keep a few softy's etc underneath them without any problems or any corals that don't require real intense lighting. As far as color goes, it gives the tank a very nice balanced look:)

Hope that helps and good luck!!:)

Welcome to the forum!!! the only one of those that i have used is Purple Up...it is pretty much just a Ca/ Alk additive...i don't use it anymore..in your tank, it is unnecessary..all you need to do to replenish the Ca is a small water change(3-5g)..this will replenish everything your tank needs...i like Instant Ocean the best..

Here is a link in reference to SEA-LAB 28. I know from my previous experience in this hobbie that there are many differant beliefs and methods of maintain our little wet friends. My LFS guy swears by this product and a few others do also while others don't. I'm no chemist so I try to get as much practical experience as possible. Some of what the " Company " claims I have to say I do have a few doubts about..." releases as needed ". I'm not to sure on that one...but all n all I'm just curious as it is a simple way to add suppliments to the enviroment that we try to maintain. I haven't purchased any major test kits as of yet but all my basic water parameters are good...nitrates,nitrites,alk. I will be purchasing a reef test kit in the very near future. Anyway I'm just trying to get as much good or bad feed back as I can...and yes it has been awhile since I have set up a saltwater tank and from what I have been reading a few beliefs, concepts and procedures have changed...go figure...some things change and some remain the same. I thank all who have replied for their experiance, advice and suggestions. I look forward to interacting with you all. Here is the link ....
