Hi,

I have a question regarding my Hepatus/Regal Tang. I just got him last Friday along with a Kole Tang. The Kole tang never ate and didn't stop breathing heavy and only lasted 3 days. At first my regal Tang was fine. Swimming, picking algae, looked just fine. The day after my Kole died my Regal started hovering at the top corner of the tank with his mouth open(his mouth now never closes). Now at day 3. He will swim around, when I feed - he'll eat and swim, but after a while he'll go back to the corner. He keeps going by my cleaner shrimp but for the most part the shrimp wont go on him. So, at moments he looks fine and then other times, almost floating at the top corner.

Being new at this I've done a lot of reading and even hired someone to set up my tank and do the maintence on it for a while while I learn. He's great. I called him regarding the fish and he said it sounds like velvet. Since the parasites are so small the shrimp may not see it, which would explain the shrimp not going on him. He also was just over to do a water change and tested everything - everything (tank wise) was great. He said from the sound of what was going on with the Kole and now the Regal, he's pretty sure it's velvet.

Now - solution?
He said my tang will most likely die, but that I could try and do a freshwater dip for 10 min (15 min if he can take it) and then put him in my hospital tank for 21 days and treat with copper.

He was realistic and not positive. He said if my fish handles/survives the treatment(probably wont), once I put him back in the tank he will probably get it again :doubt:

I've checked the water a few times - all levels are ok, all my other fish are ok.

So...my dilema. Does it sound like velvet (not scratching, no white spots, does however kind of look like he has a film on him, but I'm not sure - don't quote me on that)? If you think it's velvet - is it worth it - treatment wise. I'm all about doing everything I can - he's not just a fish, it's a life, however, is it really humane. Which is worse - letting him suffocate or dosing him with freshwater and then copper for that long.

Also can all my other fish get it or was it probably in the water and my other fish are just immune (4 clowns, 5 blue/green chromis, 1 yellow watchman goby, 1 molly miller (combtooth) blenny, 1 pistol shrimp and 1 cleaner shimp, with live rock, 125 gallons).

Thank you all in advance for your time.

Ya Ed,
I'm kicking myself right now for not QTing. I have a 24 gallon nano that I use for a QT/hospital tank. I followed some bad advice regarding not needing to QT. With being a new tank I was told not to worry. I should have asked more questions but I didn't. It didn't make sence at the time, and now....it really doesn't. Even when I was trying to get him out last night I couldn't. With over 100lbs of live rock and 125 gallons, he's all over the place. Thanks Ed!

As long as the fish is breathing/gilling properly, I would skip the FW bath. It can add to the problem more than anything. By the sounds of it, it's not that bad off yet? If you are unsure if this is A. ocellatum or C. irritans, treat with copper to be on the safe side. In all honesty it's more than possible for it to have both. The skin sloughing is a definate sign of velvet but not conclusive. I would not risk delaying either. The Kole lasting only three days does not bode well for the Regal so you must act quickly. If there are any other fish in this sytem, they must be treated as well. Leave the main display tank fallow for at least 8 weeks as well. You need to have enough time pass for the parasites to burn itself out naturally without a fish host.

Considering the sensitivity of this fish, please be sure you try and get Seachem's Cupramine and their corresponding test kit. If their's is not available do not buy Saliferts, it won't work. Once the QT is up and the temp/pH is stable, add the tang and then the first dose of copper. After 48 hrs add the second dose. Make sure you test the copper level 2x daily to be sure it remains at 0.5 ppm. When needing to do water changes, add the copper to the new water before using in the QT, it will make it much less guess work at maintaining the concentration. Just be sure to label the pail QT ONLY- COPPER.

Be sure you do not elevate the temp and keep the salinity the same as the tank it came from. Do not be suprised if you need an antibiotic so check at the LFS while getting the copper to see if they have Maracyn II for SW. It will work quite well.

Cheers

Steve - I have a question about the above quote. You mention "add the tang and then the first dose of copper". This might sound really dumb, but if you are going to treat all the fish, wouldn't you add them together to the tank? or is there a reason to add the tang only for the first treatment? I'm probably just reading it wrong .

I had to read that part twice also Nikki, and the way I was understanding it was that Steve is VERY concerned about the condition of the Tang. He feels that needs to be treated ASAP... the rest of the fish also need treating, but 1st get the tang going.

Actuallly "Steve" is very concerned about the tang and that's what his brain typed. It should really be all the fish!! Sorry for the confusion, sometimes the brain and the fingers don't co ordinate. :D

Cheers

I have a question about copper treatment can you get it in the average fish stoe or do you have to order it and what is it called

Also, be sure to get a test kit to monitor your copper levels during treatment.
