Hey...i have this dark patch in my 55 gal sand bed, i am not sure what it is. i have tryed to stir it up and i have tryed to remove it but it just keeps comming back...is this good or bad for my tank, and how do i get rid if it please take a look and let me know Thanks.

That is cyano. 2 things will help get rid of it, increasing flow in that area and reducing excess nutrients. How much livestock do you have and what are you feeding? What are you using for circulation?

Hey...i have a wrasse and a yellow assessor and a doz snails or so. i have 2 power heads on each end of the tank and a protein skimmer. i have around 50 lbs of live rock. i feed frozen mysis shrimp every other day, and just a small bit of it. i hope that is what you wanted to know...Thanks

increase flow! koralia or modded maxi-jet powerheads, water change will also help when you increase the flow.

In my opinion having it in your tank is not a problem and it exists in the real oceans of the world. From what you described I would guess that maybe it was just the live sand or using tap water that was causing. I have always thought that the live sand trick in the stores is a joke. Using tap water will not break the tank or hurt anything but it can cause outbreaks like that. The one thing I can say from experience is if you keep trying to get it out of your tank and do nothing to prevent it from coming back it will always come back, and you will be frustrated. So in my opinion don’t worry about it and it will go away when it uses up all the nurturance that it’s getting from the water. Don’t do any water changes for a while if your using tap water, if you’re not using RO-DI water, get some.

I have fought the red slimy cyano bacteria many times. It definately pops up in areas of low flow, or where extra food collects. Add flow, remove as much as you can, and feed a little less for a while. Gene at NW Seed and Pet on Sprauge said that he was getting a chemical solution to get rid of it, but I havn't seen or tried it yet.

one trick ive found is that if you have a remote refugium with some light and microalgae, and run a slow flow through it it will grow there instead of your display tank. i collect some red slime every week.
