Hi I have a chiller question. Is it possible to run a chiller with more capacity than needed. Say a HC 500a on a tank only 50litres?
Thanking you in advance.

You can go bigger than needed. If anything, it probably won't cut in as much or for as long each cycle. Just like an air condition for a house if you went bigger than needed. May burn more electricity though.

I would think that it would not use as much electricity if it was not working as hard and as often.
Yes, go bigger than needed. Like Krish said, it will cool the water faster and not run as hard and as long as one rated for less capacity. I would think the chiller would last longer too since it would not be overworked.

Well,, I'm going to against the crowd and say, that the HC 500a chiller is not going to work very well on your 50 litre tank.
My reasons are the HC-500a chiller is a 1/2 hp chiller.
HC-500A
The 50 litre tank is only about 13 gallons.

Unless I'm not seeing something right............................

1/2 hp chiller on a 13 gallon tank, just doesn't sound like a good fit to me.

i totaly agree with mfinn. something is not adding up right here. tell us alittle more about your set up. are you running halides on that small tank. why is it getting hot. if anything. jump on the band wegon. sell that big chiller and with the money you get from the chiller and buy led lighting. led light puts out very very low heat. no need of chillers. unless you keep your house very hot?
