I am getting my first corals next week, a silver pulsing xenia, some orange zoanthids and a frag of star polyps. I have been trying to use the kalkwasser to maintain a stable pH, alkalinity and calcium. I finally got a calcium test and see that my calcium levels are quite high something like 500ppm. Are there any bad effects to my fish/inverts at this level? I read that xenia doesn't like pH that is too high, and with the kalk, my pH is about 8.4 consistently. I don't think these types of coral will use much calcium will they?

What is your salinity and alkalinity? What type of salt are you using?

Salinity is 1.025, alkalinity I think was 300 ppm. I use Instant Ocean for salt and RO water. I was having low pH problems before and unstable alkalinity, so people told me I should use kalk, but it seems like I've just got a new set of problems now........

You just need to use a less saturated mix of kalk. Do a good sized water change to get the CA/Alk balance back. Then test, every other day for a week or two, make a chart or graph, and you will probley only have to dose kalk once a week the rest of the time just plain rodi water.

That level of Ca shouldn't really have an adverse effect on fish....but LPS/SPS may suffer....at levels above 420ppm Ca, the coral burns too much energy ridding its tissue of Ca to make the skeleton, and tissue growth can suffer.

Xenia seem to like high pH, 8.3-8.4 should be fine.
