Cleaner water is always the best choice for reducing nuisance algae.

As far as critters, need a pic to know what kind of algae exactly we are talking about

there's different things that can take care of algae .... water changes, phosphate removers, snails on top of snails and more snails after that , crabs (not a good choice sometimes hehe ) but it all comes to whatever you're feeding and how much dood .
