I have a 110 tall will a proclear sump tank. I have had a problem with ich killing my fish so I have decided to put a uv sterilizer on my tank. What are some suggestions for sterilizer, how many GPH should I use to run it and where should I Place it. Thanks

See if these links help out a bit. The slower the flow through the unit, the more you will kill off. One thing to keep in mind, if the sleeve gets dirty, then the UV won't be doing anything. So, you'll need to perform the necessary maintenance on your unit to ensure it functions at its highest potential. UV Sterilizers are great, but they are not a 100% eliminator of C. irritans. It will only kill what passes through the unit. My UV unit is on the return to my tank. I have a bypass for the unit, so I can take it off periodically and clean it without hindering my tank at all.

UV Sterilizers - What is it and how is it used?

Hope this helps!

I have a 40watt UV, and try to keep my flow rate down to about 600-700 gph. The manufactur states flow rate up to 1500gph, but understanding the slower the water flows through the better kill %... I keep flow to about 1/2 max.

This alone won't get rid of your ICH problem however. I recommend searching here on the ICH posts by Steve-S... and getting those fish into a Quarentee tank for treatment, then allowing your main display to be "fallow" (without fish) for the lifecycle of the ICH.

Depending on the species, treat with hyposaility in a seperate quarantine tank.

Once the fish have been removed from your display system, leaving it fallow as Ed suggested will break the life cycle of the parasite. No fish should be returned to the display system for 8 weeks. The UV may help reduce the level of infestation to "managable" but will not normally eliminate the problem. The parasite will continue in the system and be a source of stress to your fish.
