I've had this mean bugger since day 1 (5 years ago). It has killed every fish I put in the tank except for a 6 line wrasse I had and it never touched the seahorses, shrimp, etc. I don't want to get rid it because it was my first saltwater fish.

Anyway I need help in identifying as it was sold to me as a true perc. After looking at quite a few pics I'm not sure it is. I would love to put another fish or two in the tank (29g long with 5 gallon refug) but I'm tired of wasting money as he seems to be the 'king of the hill' so to speak.

It appears to be a Percula, but could be an Occellaris. The best way to properly tell the difference, is to count the rays of the dorsal fin. Even that isn't 100% accurate, since the number of possible fin rays overlap, between the two species. A lot of people go by the amount of black, though this isn't 100% reliable.

Perculas can be dastardly devils. You gotta remember, all clown fish are damsels. They're every bit as capable of having the "bad behavior" traits that any other damsel has.

Thanks for the reply. I checked around and found some info that said true percs had 10 spines (rarely 9) on the dorsal and thicker black lines where as Occs have 11 (rarely 10) and thinner black lines. Given that info I too have come to the conclusion that it's a true perc. I guess if I want any other fish in the tank I'm going to have to trade him out. He's (probably a she) just too mean.
