I have a 55 gallon tank in which the only filter is live sandbed, and live rock. my circulation is a rio 1100 plus a bak pak 2 skimmer. I have pulled all the media from the bak pak. My question is this, Do I need the prefilter on the skimmer intake? Can I just take it off to improve flow and skim the stuff that usually clogs the prefilter?

What kind of skimmer is it? Can't say I can recall a skimmer with a prefilter sponge on the intake for the skimmer. I've only seen them on the output like the Euroreefs.:)

If you are using the bakpak skimmer you don't need a prefilter, Just keep your venturi and airline clean on a regular basis.

Very cool, thanks for the info, I always like to check before doing such things. Intake filter is now off. It'll probably scum up the inside of the skimmer a little more, but what the heck, it becomes an algae scrubber to boot.
