I just wanted to put something up to see what supplements people are using and would reccomend. I have slightly fallen off the wagon as far as keeping up with what good trace elements are for my reef. I also want to see what everyone is feeding their coral I have mostly softies and LPS but would definitely like some ideas of what to get that will make a noticible improvement on my reef even though it is a fairly healthy and older established tank. Thanks friends......

What are you current levels now (ie calcium, alk, mag etc)? You may not need to add anything if all are in check. Worse thing anyone can do is supplement without testing so let us know your numbers if you have them on hand. :)

For suppliments I just use kalk and and a calcium reactor, this takes care of my alk and cal. I dose once a month some Warner Marine Magnesium Chloride to take care of the mag. Nothing else for elements. For feeding corals I dont directly feed my corals, but instead make my own fish food (blender mush) and then allow the waste from it to pass down to the corals.

A lot of the food I feed the fish end up in the zoas and some of the lps mouths too.
I dont use the suppliments but twice a month or maybe three times a month.

Supplements? What's that? :blah: LOL! I don't supplement anything and haven't in years. I do weekly water changes (or every other week if Murphy catches up with me) and use a high quality salt mix. I also top-off with Kalk which really helps to stabilize things in the tank long-term.

Feeding:
  • Rods Food (feeds everyone in the tank)
  • Frozen Krill (anemone treats)
  • Silverside (anemone treats)
  • Frozen Mysis (feed when guests are over and just want to see the tank "Feed")
Once in a while I may pick up something from the local fish market as a TREAT but that's about it day in and day out.

Some great advice came from Krish

Dosing w/o occasional testing is like putting a quart of oil in your car every time you get gas. Yes your car "may" need it but without a "gauge" (aka testing) you're probably going to overfill it eventually and end up causing more harm than good.

I use a kalk reactor (hooked up to top off) and a calcium reactor. I have some dolomite in the calcium reactor to keep my mg stable

I feed rod's food (feeds everything in the tank)

i use purple up about once a week and i use cyclop-eaze too but im not too sure if it really helps or makes a difference...but what about iodine or strontium and molibdenum stuff like that all together im looking for something just basic like essentrial elements. Like I said my reef is pretty healthy i have plenty of inverts that shows me its pretty stable. I also plan on starting up a weekly water change routine again but i have had the same inhabitants for a couple of years now but want to see if there are any more tricks to make it better.

This is the method I found to be the most effective. When I started dosing amino's, iodine, and other trace elements my tank eventually seemed to suffer from one thing or another, ie. bryopsis, cyano, etc......

Why the purple-up? Just curious. If you are trying to promote coralline algae growth you can get better results keeping alk, calcium and mag all in check and balanced. I used Instant Ocean salt mix always. When I added corals, calcium and alk were being used up more than the salt mix could provide with weekly water changes which I figured out through testing my water regularily. To fix it, I used the 2 part B-Ionic calcium and alk supplement, found my correct doseages for my current setup and dosed accordingly. As more corals went in the tank (or grew) the demand became greater for some trace elements and so I adjusted again for it. Always important to keep an eye on these things periodically. "Prevention is better than cure." If you can prevent a tank suffering from low calcium levels as an example by testing and dosing for it, then you won't have to deal with any problems that may arise associated from it.

Just a thought. :)
