Kalkwasser

I've personally never heard of anyone using Kalk to control algae or Kalk causing algae  If so, that's news to me! I'll tag along to see what responses you get, but from what I understand, Kalk is just to add calcium to the tank and I've never heard of algae needing any calcium to grow or it causing algae to grow. People usually drip kalk as well from what I remember seeing during my readings and not so much add it during a water change. Like I said though...I'll tag along for this one. I don't really know anything about the stuff:)

Simply put kalk is a balanced calcium and alk additive. It will improve skimming but will also raise ph. I wouldnt use it unless you need it.

I have had this problem and Boomer has been helping me over a couple months now getting things in line. I am quite new but I would only suggest:
1) get good, reliable test kits
2) Follow Boomer's advice to the "T".
3) Check out the link under his water chemistry - Wonderful world of reef chemistry. He has lots of great links that will really help get a good grasp on basic parameters and then from there - Just never stop reading.
4) Reefkeeping requires that a person is always learning and observing not only the tank but how other folks techniques can really help a guy out.

As for kalk, It has really helped keep my parameters Ca++, Alk in line. Getting it to that point is best left to the guidance of the pros but once there the growth of my SPS are just unbelievable. As for algae, it is growing from the nutrients in the water. Check your NO4, Ca, Alk, and Mg, Sal.. Get it all together and also basics like water replenishment and salt types. Then search for the boilogical reason it is happening. Sump? Refugium? A GFO product is helping for me. Hope it helps.

Im not adding nothin, this tank is doing so good, my stuff is growing everyone is happy, fishies are swiming, merlin and the cromie's are happy.

brown bob hasnt killed anyone in a while, I do have this crab that im starting to think was a bad idea to put in there, hes geting bigger and i see him waying his claws around at other inhabs like "Hey! gtf off my lawn homes!"

he will snatch a fish once he gets bigger?

guess i should do some tests, i havent tested in a while, but i dont care,

ive done water chagnes every day almost since i came back from Nc, the green bush is in retreat,

I think where you have heard that particular line... is when someone uses a Kalk paste, to help rid themselves of unwanted Aptasia.

I haven't heard of it being used to kill off unwanted Algea... but doesn't mean it couldn't??? Not sure I would want to be the person that tried, to see though.

ya i might have beef that when i was typeing it, but, i thought thats what they ment,

its also a good idea to cross referance things with other people b4 atempting,

most of the time you find out that its just better to not even attempt
