Boomer, could you help in the understanding of how this can be used for Phosphate removal? What is LA-35? Also, is the new Blue Life Phosphate Control product similar?

Thanks as always.

Where did the LA-35 come from. I can only assume it means a 35 % salt solution of Lanthanum chloride.

How it works

LaCl2 + H20 ---> La ++ + 2Cl- + H2O

La++ + PO4-- ---> LaPO4

The Lanthanum chloride dissolves in the water, giving free Lanthanum and Chloride ions. The Lanthanum ion attaches to a Phosphate ion and produces a solid, like Aragonite CaCO3, which settles to the bottom or where some may get picked up by the skimmer. One needs to be careful with this stuff, as it is easy to form LaCO3, which can deplete the Alk.

DonW and I have a post on it here.

Blue Life Phosphate Control is Lanthanum chloride

The only real good use Ive found for this stuff is to knock the P out of fresh salt mix. Mixing the salt the pumping it through a low micron sock or pleated filt on it way into the main system works well.
