My lfs told me not to put lava rock in my aquarium becuase it traps salt but it seems to me that it would be a good base rock and since it is very porous it could become good live rock down the line. Does anyone have any input on this?

Lavarock has minerals and stuff like that, if kept in aquarium, its possible it might make phosphates

I guess I got pretty lucky with mine. No issues in any of the tanks its been over the years...well, no issues that couldnt be attributed to my stupidity.

i also have a piece or two that i used as base rock. so far no issues as well and it's been in my tank for 2+ years and the previous owners for 4+ years.

All my base rock was/is lava.....I have had it for a couple years too, with no noticible issues..... :)

My FOWLR has some sweet pieces of lava in it. I also have some flower anenomies and mushrooms in that tank and its been up for over a year with no probs yet. :)

Welcome to RF Jason! At first I wondered what you were talking about, then I realized you were referring to Nick's signature line. LOLOL.
