LED and SPS

Hey Sarang, I think you might spend even more time than I do researching LED's. I have a friend in Taiwan who is a Trading company for several mainland China manufacturers, one being supposedly the largest LED manufacturer in the world and am looking into bringing in components or product of my specification (though I would need to apply for UL listing and posably patents depending on product and how it would be marketed) They already produce LED std household lighting as well as an outside streetlamp in 100, 120, 150 & 180w that coould easily be modified for aquarium usage.

Hahaha I am an info geek:lol::lol:. So will you be selling LED diodes and components in the near future? I was actually looking at some 100w LEDs. 4 of those would light up my 270g tank.

so far some of my sps corals are not liking the leds. some of my millis and humillus have little polyp extention.

"they are gonna be all bad for SPS" mark my words..
You SPS lovers and growers will be telling me "you were right, I should have kept my MH's on the tank.."

Apollo.....That is one of the reason why I wanted to get a small fixture to experiment and have 1st hand experience with before I spend thousands of dollar for something that is fairly new and have very little track record in the hobby. I did not want to buy something from a vendor/manufacturer that is trying to push a certain product. I'm the type of person that need to gather info from multiple sources before I spend my hard earned money on something. You can't just listen to the one guy pushing that one product they are selling.

LOL just like when I told you DO NOT get an acryilc tank when you 1st started. Now you say I will NEVER buy one again LMAO:badgrin::badgrin::badgrin:

Are you talking about Rafal? He hasn't pushed the product. The whole group buy started when Jeff was showing off his lights to Cy at the shop.

Roscoe, it seems you have been so critical and skeptical of LED lighting. An opinion your entitled to, but if your so skeptical why did you order an LED fixture of any kind? I know that using LED to grow coral is new to us, but just because some dumbass on some forum with 200ppm nitrates couldn't grow coral with LED doesn't mean it applies to everyone else, like you or me.

If I'm wrong I guess I made a three thousand dollar mistake. I sure hope I didn't.

The way I look at it is this:

If there was ONLY one company on the internet that sold pills that claimed to make your penis bigger and they were 100 dollars a bottle I would be skeptical.

Now, If there were four or five different companies that all made a pill to enlarge your penis but it cost 2 or 3 thousand dollars a bottle I would be more inclined to believe they work.

And when I say your, I don't mean as in YOU specifically, but rather you as a general consumer. LOL

Bottom line is there are already a few options for LED lighting. No business could stay open selling lighting systems that cost several thousands of dollars, that do not even grow coral.

You could get rich selling small men, big empty promises at $100 dollars a bottle.

You would go bankrupt selling $1000.00+ dollar lighting systems that don't grow corals.

Sorry I couldnt come up with a better comparison. I figured in both situations the guys is willing to spend the cash if he wants new growth. Plus the satelite company reconnected the porn channel so........... yeah....

I didn't say they wont work..
I just don't think SPS is gonna do well
My opinion and Hopefully I'm wrong!
I think LED's give colors and highlights second to none.
Again I am just guessing..

Wow Adam. Your not even going to touch the male enhancement comment.

I don't blame you lol.

Brett it's OK to sahre your personal situation :badgrin:

Any how I'm not talking about anyone in particular. There are numerous places with that type of crap going on. Anyhow Yes I am skeptical and critical but at the same time I am also intrigued and curious too! As I am a big gadgets person too. So that is why I bought a fixture to have 1st hand experience. I don't always go by here say and Sorry dude I like to do my research before I go out and spend thousands of dollars. Not saying that you didn't or anything as I'm sure you did enough research to commit thousands of dollars to the purchase. I know I would. I'm not an impulsive consumer. Just because something is more expensive does not say it is more superior to the least expensive brand. After all it is the light that is being produced by the source that the corals want not the money you spent on the fixture. As you already know you could throw all kinds of money at your system it doesn't mean you will be successfull with it. Heck my simple 40b was my most successfull reef tank. I am having a hell of a time trying to get my big system to dial in after spending tons of money on premium equipment. So to sum this all up.... from my many hours reading up on LED it is a very promising light source for many applications. Now the next big lighting debate in a couple years will probally be Plasma lighting. Not too big in the hobby right now becasue of cost.

Funny that you mention that. When the LED TVs came out I was joking with Rochelle. What if we could buy like 3 or four smaller ones. Turn the brightness all the way up to 100%. Then have a video of the sky with passing clouds and during the night be able to see the stars and the moon, shooting stars, ect.

Have the tvs suspended high enough about the tank so that you could actually look up and see the tvs.

They would have to be super bright I know. But wouldn't that be bad ass. Even could have seaguls passing over head occasionally.

I said hey if LEDs can grow corals maybe an LED TV could too.

Far fetched, but I bet it could be done. Someday.

Hey Sarang, you are right on the money with Plasmabeing the next big thing in lighting. And along with all the competition on household LED lighting this will help to drive the price down on all LED fixtures/components.
I am definately looking at all options in importing LED components & fixtures but will focus on general usage lighting first and try to piggyback some R&D aquarium fixtures and DIY components. If I can arrange to get some product for Beta Testing I'll post here on RF. They produce something like 6,000 different LED's, diodes and related items from a fraction of a watt to 70w chips for aviation lighting.
I will also be trying out a DIY project to see for myself how different corals relate to LED as a light source. I am highly optimistic that they will shine in the long run.

P.S. Bret, that there is funny stuff. I could just see my clowns laying back chillin' in there Sarcophyton watching TV all day

Sometimes I can't make out if you are joking or not :lol::lol: and this one of them.

Todd I hope for all the success for you bro!!!! Keep us in the loop with your experiment too.

Serious as in if I could work it would be awesome.

Could you imagine. The company who builds the lights could have a server that the lighting systems sync with and a high def camera pointed at the sky in Australia. The TVs/LED monitors would be essentally be streaming live climate conditions directly to your tank. Then just have an adjustable time delay so that the lights are not coming on at 1am or something.
