I have a Mag 5 connected to my Ca reactor and recently every couple of minute it makes a loud vibrating rattling noise. Broken impeller? Any ideas?

could be a buildup of calcium carbonate on the inside, all my powerheads get that from time to time and it makes them buzz and rattle...you should probably open it up and see...

I have the same problem. I took it apart a bunch of times and see nothing. I just leave it alone. Thinking of changing pumps. Yours look like this

You need to replace impeller. Just had to do with my Mag 7.

With time the main shaft becomes loose and the pump begins to chatter. Very common problem with Mag series pumps.

Very easy (and not too pricy to do).

Makes pump run like new.

Mag 5 Replacement Impeller

Marine Depot

(would highly recommend that anyone using a Danner pump to have a spare impeller on hand for when failure occurs - which of course is just a matter of time  - and of course will occur at midnight on a holiday.)

One thing you might be able to do to put off replacing the impeller is to hot glue the rubbery shaft end supports into the pump housing. When my Mag started rattling, I figured out that those supports were a bit wobbly in the pump housing. The hot glue snugged things up and everything got quiet again.

After a month, it started rattling again, so that's when I replaced the impeller. As others have said, spare impellers are a must.

Thanks for the help. When you guys had the rattle was it constant or intermittent?

Will go from intermittent to constant...humming noise definitely/vibration begins to get louder.

You probably gotten used to the noise it is making, so you will be quite pleased with how quiet a new impeller makes it.
