Is there a difference (other than price) between the mag 9.5 for ponds and the one for aquariums? I see them for quite a bit less from pond supply stores, but I don't know if they are different or not.

Thanks

Reed, I don't think there is. On the box the pump came in when I ordered it online from an aquarium retailer, it says it's for pond use, not aquarium, so it's my guess that they're all the same.

I hadn't thought of checking out buying one of the pumps at a pond supply store...I'm gonna have to check that out.

Thanks ;)

So your saying that a pump labeled "Mag 9.5" sold from a pond place is different than one sold from an aquarium retailer? I just don't get it. If your saying that the Pondmaster line from Mag is different, that I understand. I was just wondering if the pumps labeled "Mag 9.5" from the pond supply houses (that are cheaper) are the same as the ones labeled "Mag 9.5" from the aquarium retailers. I can't imagine a difference.

More checking is necessary based on the comments form LvFishguy.

Hmm, I will call them today and find out what the difference is on the inside. Maybe they use a steel shaft or something.

Regards,
Kevin

I believe that it is a difference in the shaft. if you look at the numbers on them you will see 9.5A or 9.5B the later is the S/W safe one.

I just got off the phone with Danner (mfg. of Mag pumps) and there is no difference in the two pumps except for the cord length. It may be in some of the older pumps there were but not now. They are both saltwater safe.
I also opened my replacement impeller 9.5-A and it has a ceramic shaft and is saltwater safe. I believe the A/B designation is for a pump housing change but I did not verify that with Danner (I can if someone needs to know).

HTH,
Kevin

The pond pump (also a mag 9.5) I purchased says on the box that it also can be used for saltwater ponds. I wonder if the pond pumps that can be used in salt applications indicate it on the box.

wow that's a big price difference, wonder what kinda price difference there is on the larger pumps.
