What is yours?

Mine is without question my flame wrasse. Comes to front of glass immediately when approaching tank...hard to take any photo in tank without getting at least part of him in it.

Definitely a "in your face fish" --- that seems to always come out and join everyone in living room

He knows he is pretty and likes to show it.

(Thanks to Eric at the Shark Reef)

Hawaiian Flame Wrasse

Latin Name: Cirrhilabrus jordani
Common Name: Hawaiian Flame Wrasse (male)

I'll say! He's gorgeous! How does he act towards your crustaceans? Does he eat them? I want to get a wrasse some day but I keep reading that they eat shrimp etc.

Flasher and fairy wrasses don't eat shrimp, but they like to jump out of your tank.

These genuses of wrasses are considered reef safe (won't eat shrimp/crabs/snails):
  1. Cirrhilabrus
  2. Pseudocheilinus (sixline and similar)
  3. Paracheilinus

While these are not reef safe:
  1. Coris
  2. Anampses
  3. Thalassoma
  4. Gomphosus (bird wrasses)
  5. Choeredon (Harlequin Tusks)
  6. Novaculichthys (dragon wrasse)
  7. Several other genuses, most usually not found in aquarium trade

Not sure of reef-safeness:
  1. Macropharangodon (leopard wrasses)
  2. Halichoeres (many claim they won't eat shrimp, but I'm not convinced yet)

I am not sure what category mystery wrasses fall into, but I had one that quickly ate my cleaner shrimp. Pretty amazing to see, as the shrimp were about as big as the wrasse.

Wow, that's surprising. They're a Pseudocheilinus wrasse. I always thought they were safe. I stand corrected. So essentially there's only 2 that are safe, flashers and fairies (Paracheilinus and Cirrhilabrus). And maybe Halichoeres/Macropharangodon if you're feeling lucky.

my stupid cromies..... they wont get outta the *$^#*@ way!

you could feed them bleach and they would be like

"eh which way did he go boss which way did he go"

thanks, Tom

I saw a couple of beautiful wrasses at the LFS yesterday but I couldn't find any information about their reef suitability in books:

Argus wrasse (same body shape as Coris wrasse)
Picture wrasse

Any tips on where I can find the info. about whether they are reef safe or not? I didn't have much luck on Google or in the standard paperback Marine Fishes book.

Has never bothered my shrimp (I have 4 in tank - 2 harlequins, 1 cleaner, 1 blood)

Neither does my sixline.
