Has any one on here ever moved a tank long distance. I am planning on moving here shortly and need to figure out what I need to do. I do not want to sell everything and that seems to be the only way. I am probably going to end up on the East Coast and really do not want to have to start this expensive hobby all over. I am just hoping that somebody out there has made this journey with even a little bit of success.

personally i wouldnt even try it that far of a distance would be rough i recently moved about 10 miles and even being able to move the tank and set it back up within 5 hours i lost atleast 1/3 of my sps and loss of color in alot of others...idd sell livestock for sure liverock and equipment would be fine but corals is just hard...

How big of a system do you need to move?


If there is anybody here that can baby sit your corals/fish and then ship them to you when you get setup in your new place.
Moving the equipment shouldn't be too difficult.
The tank itself might be a pain. Buying one out there might make more sense.

I agree with Finn. If you're able to find someone to take care of your fish and corals, until you've moved and got your tank set up AND re-established, and then ship the livestock to you, it'd be much better. That much of a move, your tank is going to experience a cycle, when you set it back up. This will be hard on your livestock.

Sell the tank and contents. Ship the equipment that is smaller than UPS extra large or pack it all and ship common carrier.

ehh. its more than possible if your willing. i've known people to move across the country with a car full of tanks and have no problems. but it seems like a pain. you would be surprised what yah can do with some rubbermaid bins

Realistically, your best bet to is to sell everything before you move. Sure you will lose some money, but what if something went poorly and you lost half or 3/4's of your corals? You would certainly be much worse off monetarily then if you sold everything an re built. This is just based off my own experience of moving my corals. My corals all survived the move, but the tank I put them in was just too fresh and I lost most of them. I would have much rather sold my 30 colonies then watched them die =\
If you have one or two colonies that you really like, you can have someone hold them and ship them to you later once your tank is set up and established.

Well guys I knew what the answer was going to be. I knew that selling the livestock was going to be my only option. Thanks guys now I am going to go into the bathroom lay down on the floor and curl up into the fetal position.

as my name indicates, NC2WA, I made a move from East to West coast 3yrs ago.

personally, my best advice is sell all livestock, inverts, and corals..keep and ship the live rock and tank and related equipment....I was lucky that I had a moving company crate my tanks...all tanks arrive fine with no cracks..funny how it worked out, that I ended up selling my 125g tank that was moved from NC to Chad and then had Jason @CFI build a 375g tank for the new house we bought in WA.
