Good Morning,

I have started up a 5.5 gallon reef tank (rising out of the ashes of the 55 wiped out by the power outage), and am curious what the best configuration would be for the Aqua Clear 20 I am using for filtration. Should I use the foam filter block as I would on a FW tank, or will I get a lot of nitrates from this? If I shouldn't use the block, what should go in it's place?

I am also using a Fission nano skimmer. Seems to be working OK, but the skimmate cup fills up rapidly with mostly "clean" water, and not so much skimmate. Hopefully as the tank matures this will improve.

Thanks,

Dan

Good luck on the new tank and sorry to hear about your other one :doubt: As for the filter, I wouldn't run the sponge. If not cleaned or changed every 2 days or so, it will degrade water quality from the waste settling on it and rotting. If it were me, I'd just run some carbon in it's place.

As for the skimmer, I've heard mixed things about the fission skimmer with more being on the bad side. I run a AquaC remora (nano version) on my 24gal aquapod and it skims really well. I've never used the fission so can't really comment, but I'll stand behing the AquaC:)

Krish,

Thanks for the advice. I was leaning that way.

I'm considering switching to a Remora Nano, just need to save my pennies.

By the way, nice tank stand.

Dan

Krish, YOU NUB!! haha, why not the full blown remora?? common! skimping on the skimmer is a new low! =P i woud get the normal remora if i were you. the nano remora is only 20$ cheaper and its only like 3 inches "shorter" and btw, how are you gonna hang that thing on a tank that is only like 6 inches tall haha good luck with that one.

ROFL! I run the nano remora and it does the job. I always have small bio-loads;) As for how Dan can use it on his tank, if the tank is on a stand and flush with the stand on the backside, the remora can drop lower and not cause a problem like in the attachment:)
