So you finally decided to sign up to the greatest reefing forum on the internet and now you need to know how to find your way around the site. Navigating a place that you are un-familiar with can be a bit frustrating at times so we thought we'd put together a quick "How To" to help you find your way around. :)

So with that said, let's get started! We will be concentrating on the home page which is the first screen you will encounter when log in. Any and everywhere you need to get to on RF can be accessed from the homepage.

Our first screen shot shows the top portion of the home screen.

Red box - You will find this section displayed on any page you visit here on RF which is quick access to some of our favorite links including the "sponsors" links that takes you to their respective websites, a few of our selective "photo galleries", the "chat room" where you can hang out to shoot the breeze with your fellow reefers at any time, the "classifieds" section where you are able to buy and sell new/used personal items (reef related) granted you meet the required criteria to participate there whether it being either a 30 day/ 50 post requirement first or you obtain premium membership that gives you instant access and then lastly, our carefully put together "resource library".

Green Box - The RF banner is actually more than just a pretty banner. It is actually one of your quick links as well that is displayed on any page that you visit here on RF. Clicking it will take you back to the home page.

Orange box - This is the last section of quick links you will find displayed on any page you visit here on RF. To the left side, we "Home" and "welcome To Reef Frontiers" tabs which will both take you back to the home page just like the RF banner does. The "forum" tab will take you our list of all the dedicated forums we have here all ranging from general reef discussion, specialty equipment forums all the way down to even our various club forums. This is where all discussions take place. Next we have our "blog" tab where you can view the different members blogs and then lastly the "What's New Tab" that will display all of the "new" posts since your last visit to the site. Over to the right side, will be basically all of your personal control tabs with the addition to our advanced search feature. Clicking on your username or the "My profile" tab, will take you to your personal profile page. Here you will view your profile as if you were any other member looking in at it. No editing of your profile is done here, but rather just the info you have allowed others to see, will be displayed here. Then we have the "notifications tab". This is where you will be notified of any incoming private messages (pm's) or incoming visitor messages as well as friend requests. You can also access your pm inbox from here as well. The "setting's" tab is where you can edit your profile to customize it to your liking. Things like adding in or editing your signature which will be displayed on the bottom of any post you make here can be done here, you can also add an avitar which is a profile picture that will be displayed on any post you make here, all the way down to account settings. Next, we have the "advanced search" tab. This is your RF search feature. Simply type in what it is you are specifically looking for and the function will do the rest for you displaying all of the threads it finds related to your search querry and lastly, your "log out" tab. Self explanitory. :)

K...On to screen shot number 2

Red Box - I'll call it our "Become A Sponsor" box LOL! Buying and selling here on RF through the classifieds is free of charge once it is not "commercial" in nature. If you own a buisness and would like to be able to advertise from a commercial standpoint, then here is where you want to visit to sign up and become a sponsor of RF. With it comes your own dedicated forum to advertise whatever your buisness has to offer as well as specials you may have from time to time and it even provides an area where you can have your very own discussions with your customers etc. In addition to this, your company banner will be added the homepage which rotates between all the different sponsors each time the home page is refreshed (just to name a few).

Yellow Box - For those wanting to support the site and receive some special added bonus features including things like instant access to the classifieds forum with unlimited ads per year, a larger pm storage box, increased photo gallery space, a unique RF email account, access to premium members special forum, a cool "I support RF" badge added to your profile, access to the webinar series to view live presentations, as well as even your name added into a drawing each month or so where you could possibly win whatever prize is given away then this is the box you want to check out!

Green Box - This is your navigation menu all layed out in one list. It includes almost all of the tabs explained in screen shot one with the addition of a few extra's only accessed from this bar. Our newest addition for example would be the "spy" tab. Click this and you can watch RF activity in real time as posts are made. Pretty cool!!

Pink Box - Back with more features is our RF calendar. In it you will find all of the up-coming events, sales etc which members have the option of adding in and updating themselves. This however can only be done from the calender tab found on the navigation menu which is the green box we just discussed.

Blue Box - In this area you will find the most recent articles being displayed for your reading pleasure put together at the moment, by RF staff and mods. You are given the opportunity to either leave a comment at the bottom of the article or you may be provided with a link that will take you to a thread where you can discuss the article in more depth. From time to time these will replaced with newer articles and as one is moved, for now, the old one will be added to a list which you will see displayed in the next screen shot just incase you wanted to go back to read previous articles.

Screen shot 3

Red Box - As stated, this is the box to view all of the past articles that have been published on RF.

Green Box - A list of the current online users. In the picture, you will see "277 users online" in blue...By clicking on that link, it will take you to a screen where you can see what each of these online members are currently doing at that point in time. Kind of like spying or being nosey :p. Also, you have the option to click on any of the individual members name listed which will take you to their profile page. From there you can then send them a private message, gather a bit of personal information on them, search their previously started threads and posts etc. etc.

Pink Box - My personal favorite! This box will display all of the most current threads going on in terms of what was last "bumped" (replied to) since you last refreshed the home page. Just click the home tab and see what the most current threads are.

Orange Box - This will simply display who is currently in the chat room.

Aqua Box - Forum stats...Pretty self explanitory and there just for your general knowledge.

Black Box - Small area designated for news feed

Screen shot number 4.

Red Box - This box will display all of the most recent posts made here and will be updated everytime the home page is refreshed. It can be looked at as a more detailed version of the recent thread box which only display a thread once on the list even if it has been replied to 3 times back to back. With the recent post box, if the thread is replied to 3 times back to back, it will list every post made here granted they are all the most recent ones.

Green Box - Our RF plug in. Everyone has facebook and if you don't you are missing out :D

Pink Box - This displays the most current poll going on. You can also access the poll from the link in the box which is a shortcut rather than having to click the forums tab and then scrolling down to the poll section.

And last, but not least, screen shot number 5. Didn't realize the home page was so BIG!!!

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Red Box - This box will show up on the bottom of any page you visit here. First one up is the "Contact Us" tab that will take to a page that allows you to send a message to forum administrator. Next tab, "Reef Frontiers" is another way to take you back to the home page or if you are already on the home page, it will just refresh it for you. "Archive" takes you to where its name states which is our archives and lastly, "Top" tab takes you to the top of the page. Similar to like hitting the home key on your keyboard.

Pink Box - Kinda hard to see, but this link will take you to our user agreement page...Something we all need to familiarize ourselves with.

So now you know how to find your way around the board. Keep in mind that from time to time, some of these boxes may be re-located to different parts of the screen as we try new ways to improve the look of the site, but in general, everything should still work pretty much the same way. Good luck!! :)

Also, just though I should add this here... If you guys come across anything you need a step by step done on with screen shots, just post it here and I can do it for you. Things like how to edit your signature, upload an avitar picture etc. whatever. Just let me know. :)

I need to email a member but I dont have any posts. Is they easier way to do this?

Hmm...I think with the email's you need a certain number of posts to contact anyone here as well as some people may have their accounts set not to be able to receive emails. I think it may be the same with pm's as well requiring a certain number of posts. The forum is set up this way with the post count to protect the members and the forum from spammers so as a result I can't really think of any way around that right now.

BTW, Welcome to RF :welcome:

Hello Everyone!:humble:
Support RF by Supporting our sponsors. Just an FYI, each sponsor has banners that when you click on them it takes you to their Web site, this also allows them to keep track of where their business comes from, so please consider this when shopping online, click those banners. Also remember to use the codes given in their forums, usually it gives you a price break or some sort of deal and it also helps them keep track of where the sales are coming from, do this and we have happy sponsors, do this and we have a happy RF!
:peace:
Thanks everyone!

Just a little note until things are fixed....

If you are having trouble finding your user settings like where you would change your avitar, edit your signature etc, just click on your notifications tab and you can access it from there. For some reason the settings tab is missing and we are trying to figure out where it went. :)

K...So here is how you get to your general settings to edit your signature, avitar etc. You can use the notifications tab as I mentioned in my last post or use this method.

Click on the forums tab

Then click on forum actions and then select general settings

And then you are in and can access everything in here.

Hello I am having trouble adding a signature to my account. I followed the instructions above but there is no Edit Signature option on my page :( I did figure out the Avitar so I know I'm looking in the write place. Its probably something simple but I'm at a loss

Any help would be appriciated

If no-one chimes in before I get home and to a pc, I'll direct you to it then. Something's may have changed since this write up was done. :)
