New tank

Have had a new tank built. It is 60x27x40 deep. The guy that made it has glued a piece of 1 inch thick multi ply to the bottom of the tank.
My question is will I have to remove the wood to sit the tank on the polystyrene or as the builder said will I be ok to put the tank and wood on the polystyrene?
How thick should the polystyrene be ?

the plywood should be fine, I would put a few coats of epoxy paint on all exposed areas for water protection from spills and leaks, if the bottom is going to be drilled you might have some issues getting bulkheads to seal (you need an oversize hole in the wood, as it has a wood bottom I'd be using some cheap carpet under the tank like indoor/outdoor. How about some pictures? sounds like a nice tank!

I've never seen any decent aquarium builder attach plywood to the bottom of their tanks. I'm not getting a warm fuzzy feeling from this. What kind of 'glue' did they attach the wood to the tank with?

I've heard of wood tanks built with epoxy, but i cannot see a builder attaching wood with an adhesive to teh bottom pane. That just seems like trouble IMO. Maybe some pics will clarify things?

It used to be the norm, its kind of a safety measure, you should be fine to place it directly on to the foam with out issue. Wit all the dynamic plumbing these days most builders dont do it any more.

Good to know Mike. SO I guess to use bulkhead through the bottom you will just have to carefully oversize the hole so the bulkhead will snug up to the glass directly. Looking forward to the pics.

I would think the thickness of the polyfoam would be between 1/2'' to 3/4''.
Any body else on foam thickness?
Or just follow BigFoots advice.

The carpet sounds a good idea, I will also get the wood painted. I would rather take the wood off, will see how well it is attached.
I think the builder put the wood on so he could slide the tank around as he was building it with out causing damage. It weighs about 700 pounds. Got Starphire glass on the front and sides 3/4 inch thick.
Hoping to lift the tank onto it's stand next week, have alot of wiring to do first. Wife will be happy, it's been sat in her kitchen for 7 months lol.
Not drilling through the bottom, going to use Vortex MP 60 powerheads.

Lol, got in the tank to check for scratches in the glass. Wife kept passing me beer.
Hoping to get it lifted into position on Sat, got some wiring to sort out and a wall to repair that I knocked out to get the tank in. Hoping to start filling with water in about 3 weeks.
Got a lot of work in the basement to do once the tank is in place. Just finished supporting the floor to take the weight. Also got to run out new electrics for the pumps and lights etc.
Was going to put a closed loop in but think I will give powerheads a try first.
Pics will follow the tanks installation on it's stand. Still not fully worked out how to lift a 700 pound tank lol

omg she passes beer too? fml oh well lol, some rental stores have air bags for lifting, some have air conditioning hoists
