Welcome to RF!!! :welcome:. You will find that on a forum, you will have basically then same thing as you see on the internet...Varying advice/info etc. The good thing about a forum though is you can ask questions and get that one on one feedback that will help you to understand the "why's" and "how's" as well as why someone chooses one method over the other. Best piece of advice I could give is ask as many questions as you can and gather all the info you can so that you can figure out which direction suites you best. What works for one person may not work for another so keep that in mind.

With that said, I will give the others a chance to chime in with their advice. I don't want to hog it all :p Good luck and hope you enjoy it here! I also moved your thread to the new to reefkeeping section to get you the best possible help. :)

Welcome. I would test the hydrometer against a refractometer to see how close it is. I had one that was 5 points low, but it was consistant. What kind of test kit is there? If it's the strips, look into a better kit. What are your goals for the tank? Fish only or reef? What came with it for lights and filtration?
